Shadows Players Represent GB at Ball Hockey World Championships

Shadows players Hazel Taylor and Amy Campbell have just returned from the ball hockey world championships in Pardubice Czech republic. The tournament saw teams from GB, Canada, USA, Italy, Czech republic and Slovakia. This is the 4th time GB have competed at the womens world championships and it was the 2nd tournament for Hazel and Amy after they competed in Zug, Switzerland 2 years ago.

The first game was a tough one for the girls, with a 10-0 loss to tournament hosts the Czech Republic, the team that went on to take the gold medal. This was played in the main arena in front of over 1000 spectators.

The second game was lost to Canada 11-0.

The team learnt a lot from the first 2 games and as they got used to playing together and playing on the big floor they improved vastly from game to game.

The third game saw the team take their first ever group stage win with a nail-biting  1-0 victory over Italy, which was unexpected and a fantastic achievement for the team.

They went on to lose 4-0 to Slovakia with Hazel Taylor being awarded “Best Player” for the game.

The final group stage game saw a 6-0 loss to the USA meaning that GB finished the group stage in 5th place and went through to the 5th/6th place play off games against Italy.

They lost the final games 3-0 and 2-0 and finished the tournament in 6th place.

Hazel said:

“This has been an absolutely amazing experience. We loved every minute of it. We have a fantastic group of girls who gave absolutely everything and never gave up. We improved from game to game and improved our results compared to the last world championships. To win a game was beyond our expectations and standing on the blue line singing the national anthem was the best feeling in the world. We are very happy with our results, everyone has had such a good time and hopefully we can improve even more for the next world championships in Slovakia 2019. I would also like to say a massive thank you to our coaches and Sadie our sports therapist who put in so much hard work to make everything possible and keep us going through the week.”
