Sheffield Shadows 3
Kingston Diamonds 2
The Shadows welcomed a very strong Diamonds side to the Bauer arena on Saturday the 11th march. This game saw five goals and an overall total of 12 penalty minutes.
The game started and there was a very early goal from the Shadows #93 Jess Holgate. Her early goal was completed after a rebound off the pads of the Hull netminder was put into the almost empty net. This was a very quick start to the game for the Shadows who ultimately benefited from this goal. The Kingston netminder was to face a lot of shots in the first period but was equal to them all. The first powerplay was called at 12:00 when Kingtson’s #90 was called for a two minute minor for roughing. Although the Shadows had the one man advantage, they couldn’t capitalise on the powerplay. There was no further action after this and remained 1-0 for the first twenty minutes.
The second period brought no goals, however it brought penalties. At 22:34 both #46 Hannah Ware for the Shadows and #13 Kirsten Deighton for the Diamonds were both handed two minute minor penalties for slashing. The majority of the play in the 4 on 4 was in the favour of the Hull side, but they failed to convert any chance they had. The Shadows then had an advantage again, when the Diamonds #13 Holly Steeples was adjudged to a slashing call at 28:03. ┬áThe resulting powerplay came to nothing and the Shadows failed to convert their chances. For the first time in this clash, it seemed to be getting fairly heated and then at 30:34 Diamonds #94 Shannon Jones was given a two minute minor penalty for slashing. This was her second penalty of the game. Again the Shadows failed to score on the powerplay. Another penalty was called at 33:02, it was a bench minor for abuse of official. Again the Shadows failed to convert on the resulting powerplay, going 0/4 on the powerplay, which from a Shadows point of view, would’ve been disappointing. The second period ended the same. A 1-0 score line in favour of the Shadows.
The third period started with bits of early pressure from the Diamonds. Going close a couple of times in the opening two minutes. Tempers were starting to get higher as #90 slashed her stick on the bench of their own team. Which shows how much it clearly meant to her and how much she wanted to get something from this game. This pressure finally payed off at 44:16. #56 Hannah Gibson finished off a nice move assisted by team mates Holly Cornford (11) and Kelly McBride (54). 1-1. Just 51 seconds after this, the Shadows got their second goal of the game. #8 Jodie Bloom getting her eighth of the season with an assist from #18 Judy Brown. Shadows second goal coming at 45:07. After this, there were a few pieces of great goal tending shown by the emergency loaned Netminder Tam Donoghue, who showed some outstanding glove work. However, she couldn’t keep out the Diamond’s second of the game at 54:16. A defensive error finished off by #90 Shannon Jones who scored unassisted. Her teams efforts payed off and it was 2-2 with 5:44 to go in the final period. However the winning goal came at 55:32. A mad scramble in front of the Diamonds goal was finished off by #46 Hannah Ware and assisted by #93 Jessica Holgate. This was Holgate’s second point of the afternoon. In the dying embers of this game, the Shadows held on to gain two vital points, which was a very good result for them. The game finished
